The 2013 Oceania Speed Skating Championships kick off this weekend in Nundah, Queensland.

 

Skaters participating will be representing Australia, New Zealand, Germany and Chinese-Taipei.

Following a successful 2013 National Championships, teams for the 2013 Oceania Championships and 2013 World Championships were announced on Sunday.

 

Oceania's will be taking place in Brisbane this year with Oostende in Belgium hosting the Worlds.

The 2013 Speed Skating National Championships are near with athletes travelling to Perth for the commencement of state team training on Sunday and official competition on Monday.

With over 80 skaters from across Australia and one from New Zealand, this championship is set to be highly competitive between the state teams especially those racing to gain selection into the 2013 International teams that will skate Oceania’s in Brisbane and World’s in Belgium later in the year.

Skate Australia Victoria Speed Branch are to be congratulated on a successful State Championships.

The competition in some grades was extremley close. A number of skaters achieved their personal best performances ands some won their first ever individual medals.

A number of trophies were handed out including a couple of encouragment trophies: as well as the "Pauline Robertson Perpetual Trophy for Sportsmanship": the Inaugral winner was Jake Round.

Our Australian Speed Skating Team returned from Italy in September after a successful World Championships.


With the help of a grant from Skate Australia to the National Speed Branch, the nine Australian athletes were able to train on the official World Championship track and have an elite preparation leading into the Championships.


A few personal bests were achieved early in the Championships with Ariel completing 29.309 in her time trial and John 26.776 in his time trial. Matthew recorded his best World’s time ever with 26.921 and Paul did his best time ever with 26.658.


We would like to congratulate Harry in achieving 8th in the Junior Mens race and crossing the line in 3rd place in another race.

 

All athletes skated to their absolute best and we are proud of your achievements.
