Cooking, singing, dancing, diving and renovating all have their own reality TV show — so why not roller skating?

Scoresby-based former men's figure skating world champion Jayson Sutcliffe believes skating is an ideal candidate to be the next hot show.

As well as being world champion in 1993, 1995, 2002 and 2005, he was also part of a skating troupe that competed in the 2010 finals of Australia's Got Talent.

Hoping to persuade television executives that skating could be the next incarnation of shows such as The Voice, Sutcliffe is hosting a reality-style skate competition at Caribbean Rollerama in Scoresby next week.

Nine teams of up to 20 skaters will perform a routine at the 2012 Roll-Line Team Sk8 Off to a song by a "music legend" — like Lady Gaga, Pink or Madonna.

A celebrity judging panel, including singer Lydia Denker, and the audience will decide the top three finalists, and eventually, the winner.

Sutcliffe said the teams had been preparing for about seven weeks. Each group had a cross-section of ages and experience and four teams from Scoresby were set to compete.

"It's a really nice mix in the groups. The younger ones are excited to be skating with their idols and said to me that they wouldn't even normally say hello to them."

Sutcliffe said the competition between teams had been "really hardcore and quite fierce".

"The teams in Scoresby are even hiding their props and costumes from each other."

The former world champion was also keen to make the event as interactive as possible.
