How long have you been involved in Skate?
I’ve been involved in skating for the past 18 years, ever since my daughter attended a roller-skating birthday party at age five. At that party, my husband Kevin laced up his old skates, and before we knew it, the whole family was hooked. Since then, both our children have gone on to become national and international champions in artistic and speed skating—and Kevin and I now compete together as an artistic dance couple. We fell so in love with the sport that we even bought a skating rink!
I started photographing my family at competitions, which quickly expanded to capturing moments for friends, our clubs, and eventually for artistic and speed skating competitions at the league, state, and national levels. As our children progressed to international events, I followed—photographing at Oceania’s, the World Skate Games, and Speed Skating World Championships.
Most recently, I accompanied Kevin, who is now an artistic coach, to Italy, where one of his skaters competed at the World Skate Games. We split our time between the speed and artistic venues, and I captured as much as I could along the way.
While I do receive modest compensation for some events, most of what I do is driven by love for the sport and its community. Any funds I earn go straight into upgrading my equipment so I can continue documenting these special moments.
What made you devote your time and efforts to the sport?
Over time, I realised that photographing skaters brought happiness not only to them but also to me. There’s something incredibly moving about capturing the exact moment someone lands a hard-earned jump or crosses the finish line after giving their all. When I can freeze that instant—pure emotion, joy, triumph—and show it to them, their smile says everything. That moment of connection, of recognition, is what drives me. I may not be a coach or an official, but I’ve found my own way to contribute to the sport I love.
What is it that you love about skating?
There’s so much to love about skating. First and foremost, the community is unlike any other. It’s one of the few sports where children, parents, and even grandparents can compete in the same event—it truly is a family affair. Beyond that, the camaraderie among skaters, coaches, and supporters is something really special.
I also love the sheer excitement of the sport. Watching a skater finally master a move they’ve worked on for months is magical. And speed skating—there’s nothing like the thrill of seeing skaters race past so fast you feel the wind on your face. It’s a sport that’s full of beauty, adrenaline, and connection.
What do you think people don’t know about the sport?
Many people don’t realise how accessible skating can be. Yes, reaching the international level requires intense dedication, training, and sacrifice. But the basic joy of skating is something nearly anyone can experience. There are clubs and coaches all over Australia eager to help newcomers build confidence, whether they aspire to compete or just want to enjoy the feeling of gliding on wheels.
People are also often surprised to learn about the breadth of opportunities in skating, from local competitions to world-class events like the World Skate Games. There’s an entire pathway in this sport that many simply aren’t aware of.
Any highlights of your time as a volunteer?
The most unforgettable moment for me was photographing my son at his first Speed Skating World Championships at the World Skate Games in Argentina in 2022. Not only was I capturing images for the Australian Speed Team, I realised I wasn’t just photographing a race—I was capturing a lifelong dream in motion. To witness that achievement through my lens—and as a mum—was indescribable and I have to admit to a few tears. That moment will always hold a special place in my heart.
