19 Australian Skateboarders have been announced to compete at the upcoming Olympic Qualifier Series in Shanghai China from 16 - 19 May.
The Shanghai competition will begin Phase 2 of the Paris 2024 qualification process culminating in the final Olympic Qualifier Series in Budapest, Hungary from 18 - 23 June.
Australia will have 12 Park athletes and 7 Street athletes competing in Shanghai; Tokyo 2020 Olympic Gold Medalist Keegan Palmer, Tokyo 2020 Olympian Shane O'Neill, 2023 X Games Gold Medalist Chloe Covell and recent Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year award recipient Arisa Trew.
The Australian team will compete amongst 44 other athletes per gender per discipline with the goal to improve their World Skate Rankings and remain in contention for a Paris 2024 qualification ranking.
Skate Australia’s Chief Executive Officer Dr Caitlin Honey said the final stage of Olympic Qualification is an exciting moment for both athletes and supporters.
“Currently eight of our Australian Skateboarders are ranked in the top 20 for their respective disciplines and gender which is an amazing feat,” said Dr Honey.
“Our athletes have been training incredibly hard and have been preparing to the best of their abilities and we are excited to cheer them on.
“We wish them the best of luck for the start of the Olympic Qualifier Series.”
Competition begins on Thursday 16 May with the Women's Park Preliminary round and the Men’s Street Preliminary round.
Following the completion of the Olympic Qualifier Series, the top 20 athletes per discipline and per gender, with a maximum of three athletes per country, will be eligible for selection for Paris 2024. The Australian Team is able to take a total of 12 athletes from within the Top 20 (3 per discipline, per gender).
