Australia’s skateboarding community marked a historic milestone in September with the staging of MOMENTUM – the nation’s first-ever all-girls bowl skateboarding competition, held in Byron Bay.
The event drew more than 40 registrations from across the country, with competitors travelling from Western Australia, the ACT, New South Wales, Queensland and even Indonesia. The competition was not only about results in the bowl but about showcasing and celebrating the extraordinary depth of female talent in skateboarding.
Skate Australia CEO Alex Anasson praised the event as a significant step forward for the sport.
“MOMENTUM represents exactly what we want to see more of in Australian skateboarding – opportunities for all, including women and girls, to shine, compete, and be celebrated. The energy, inclusiveness and talent on display in Byron Bay show that the future of skateboarding is bright.”
From first-time competitors through to emerging stars, MOMENTUM created a supportive and inspiring environment, driven by community spirit and passion for the sport. Professional skateboarder Aimee Massie brought her trademark energy as MC, while the collaboration between the Mid North Coast Skate Club and the Northern Rivers Skate Club ensured the event was delivered to an exceptional standard.
Mayor of Byron Shire, Sarah Ndiaye, praised the competition for its cultural and community impact, while the event itself also provided a major economic boost for the region, with an estimated $160,000 in visitor spend flowing into accommodation, hospitality and retail.
Christopher Winn from the Mid North Coast Skate Club.: “We wanted to create a platform that empowers women and girls to step up and showcase their skills, and the response has been phenomenal.”
Anasson said the legacy of MOMENTUM will be felt long beyond the weekend:
“Events like this are crucial in creating pathways for young women – from grassroots right through to the Olympic stage. Skate Australia is proud to support and celebrate the role of women and girls in our sport, and MOMENTUM has set a powerful benchmark for the future.”
With skateboarding’s popularity growing rapidly on the back of its Olympic inclusion, MOMENTUM has established itself as an event that will inspire the next generation of female skateboarders across the country.
