Representatives of Skate Australia were lucky enough to attend the Roller Derby World Skate Games Team Try Outs in Mount Warren on the 28th March, watching the athletes with grit and enthusiasm as they did their best to gain a position on the team with the guidance and feedback from their coach and Team Manager. Later in the evening, we joined other spectators in watching some of the best MRDA and WFTDA skaters in the country who took to the track for a fundraising game in preparation for the MRDA World Cup in Orléans, France. It was a fantastic showcase of Australian roller derby with strategy, high-impacts and energy which we felt privileged to be a part of.

Unfortunately, Skate Australia recently received the disappointing news from World Skate that the 2026 World Skate Games – Roller Derby event has been cancelled. This is a significant setback for athletes, coaches, and officials who have dedicated considerable time and effort in preparation. While this outcome is deeply disappointing, Skate Australia remains committed to supporting Roller Derby at all levels by working collaboratively across the sport’s diverse rule sets to strengthen pathways and opportunities. We will continue to support clubs and athletes nationwide, including those competing under commonly used frameworks such as WFTDA rules, while also meeting World Skate requirements for World Skate events. Our focus is on ensuring all skate sport athletes pursuing international competition are supported, and we will keep the community informed as further updates become available.
