In honour of National Volunteers Week 2025, we sat down with long time Rink Hockey Volunteer Sandy Schurmann.

How long have you been involved in Rink Hockey and what made you devote your time and efforts to the sport?

I became involved with Rink Hockey when my son started playing in 1998. From there my daughter joined as well. I completed my referees course, calculators course and level 1 coaching course.

What is it that you love about the sport?

I love the game, it is so fast and exciting. The people you meet are amazing as well.

What's something surprising people might not know about Rink Hockey?

How great the sport is and you don't have to be a player to be involved.

What's been your favorite moment as a volunteer?

Being involved with the Australian National Mens Team from 2004 to 2012, as well as the people I've met along the way.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about volunteering in Rink Hockey?

Have a go, it may not be for everyone but you will never know until you try. It is a very rewarding experience.
