Melbourne has staged one of its most significant inline skating competitions in decades, with more than 50 athletes converging on the city for a high-stakes selection event ahead of the 2026 World Skate Games.

The competition was headlined by reigning world champion Takeshi Yasutoko, whose presence elevated the event’s international standing and drew attention from across the global skating community.

The roller freestyle showcase, held earlier this month, marked a major moment for the sport in Australia, widely regarded as the biggest event of its kind since the late 1990s.

From the outset, the depth of Australian talent was on full display. The Under-13 division opened proceedings with a glimpse into the sport’s future, before the Junior category delivered a series of high-level performances as athletes pushed for selection on the world stage.

By the time the Pro division took centre stage, expectations had been firmly exceeded.

The calibre of skating reinforced Australia’s long-standing influence in the discipline, building on the legacy of pioneers such as Tom Fry, Matt Salerno, Cesar Mora and Dion Antony — all of whom were on hand in Melbourne as officials and judges.

Their involvement added significant weight to the event, ensuring the performances were assessed at an international standard.

At the conclusion of competition, Gavin Drum, Hal Durham, Theresa Wang and Valeria Soledad were confirmed as the winners of their respective divisions

The event’s success is expected to have lasting impact, not only in identifying elite talent but also in strengthening pathways for Australian skaters to reach global competition.

Organisers say the momentum will continue, with plans already underway to expand the event in 2027 and further cement Australia’s place on the international inline skating calendar.

With renewed energy, emerging talent and strong industry backing, Melbourne’s showcase may mark the beginning of a new era for the sport nationwide.

Skate Australia wishes to extend our sincere appreciation to sponsors: Kate Australia, Saint Layers, Eulogy Wheels, World of Wheelcraft, Rampant Skate Shop, Bayside Blades, Razors, and USD, whose support made the event possible.

Following the success of this year’s competition, we look forward to returning bigger and better in 2027 offering Australian athletes a pathway to international events such as the World Skate Games.
